The Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Program in Indonesia aims to build a peaceful society, a strong justice system and effective institutions throughout Indonesia. The aim of this program is to create a fair, transparent, and just system, as well as encourage sustainable peace within the country. Universitas Sumatera Utara has selected representatives that stand in the highest authority of the University, from student, faculties and staff, there are Board of Trustees (Majelis Wali Amanat) this board is responsible to make Long Term Development Plant (Rencana Pengembangan Jangka Panjang) and Strategic Plan (Renstra), Work Plan and Budget (Rencana Kerja Anggaran), and they do evaluation of each plan. besides MWA USU there also Rector, Vice Rectors, also University Secretary whom responsible for managing Universitas Sumatera Utara, Council of Professors and Senate Academic whom responsible for assessing the performance of rector..
Based on Government Law Number 16 year 2014 and had been revised by Majelis Wali Amanat Decree Number 16 Year 2016 about organization and governance of Universitas Sumatera Utara there's a regulations about students organization on that regulation it said that USU's rector and deans will nurture the students organizations and will be coordinated by administrator, based on this regulation USU have established Students Government (PEMA) or BEM USU. this PEMA consisted by students from every faculty on USU.
Universitas Sumatera Utara have regulations that had mentioned about partnership with Stakeholder, there are USU's Rector Decree Number 1501/UN5.1.R/SK/KPM and had been revised on 2022 about the implementation of Academic Collaboration, Wali Amanat Council Regulation number 16 year 2016 about organization and governance on campus, evidence that USU has identified and partnered with stakeholder outside of USU is the implementation Arrangement between USU's Faculty of Computer Science with Rumah Sakit Umum Haji Medan Pemprovsu, and with Yayasan Harum Sentosa Baru.
Local stakeholders have a meaningful mechanism and participate in decision-making at the University of North Sumatra. This is stated in Wali Amanat Council regulation's number 16 year 2016, which states that the Board of Trustees (MWA) consists of Ministerial elements, and community representatives. The element of community representatives includes the Governor of North Sumatra and other community representatives through elections. MWA has a duties and authorities such as determine and implement the goneral policies of the university, appointing and dismissing rector, drafting long term plans, strategy plans, and else.
Universitas Sumatera Utara had planned and executed a policies called Integrity Zone (Zona Integritas) and Free Corruption Area (Wilayah Bebas dari Korupsi) and Clean and Serving Bureaucratic Area (Wilayah Birokrasi Bersih dan Melayani), each of these policies has their own team which the main job of these team are for bureaucratic area reformation in order to raise the integrity of Universitas Sumatera Utara.
Started on 2017 Academic Senate of Universitas Sumatera Utara released a regulation titled "Freedom of Academic, Freedom of Academic Forum and Scientific Autonomy" where every academic communities will be given freedom for their activities, On 2022 this regulation is being revised in order to expand the realm of this regulation.

USU forms partnerships with stakeholders to enhance community service, focusing particularly on micro, small, and medium enterprises, rural development, startups, culinary ventures, and tourism. An instance of utilizing this platform and open space is a supported village collaborating with the government.
Universitas Sumatera Utara is among the universities that annually produce numerous graduates from various regions in Indonesia. Currently, it comprises 15 faculties and 1 graduate school with a total of 15 Diploma programs, 47 Bachelor's programs, 42 Master's programs, 23 Doctoral programs, 7 Professional programs, and 22 Specialist programs. The total number of USU graduates is tabulated every quarter. This year, the total number of USU graduates is 10,296.
The Faculty of Law at Universitas Sumatera Utara is one of the faculties with a high level of interest, leading to a significant number of graduates. The Faculty of Law comprises 4 study programs, including 1 undergraduate program, namely S-1 Legal Science, 2 master's programs, namely S-2 Legal Science and S-2 Notary, and 1 doctoral program, namely S-3 Doctoral Legal Science.
