Universitas Sumatera Utara organizes various activities such as conferences, workshops, and cross-sector forum meetings to support the Partnerships for The Goals program. This is an opportunity for students and the public to share knowledge, discuss and build networks with other stakeholders who have the same commitment to SDGs in Indonesia. Along with providing support for the development of projects and programs that focus on key aspects of the SDGs, USU and the Indonesian people can create initiatives that have a positive impact on society and the environment in Indonesia.

    Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has exhibited a robust commitment to sustainable development by establishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Center on May 18, 2021. This center serves as a pivotal force for direct engagement in achieving SDGs in Indonesia. Actively collaborating with government bodies, NGOs, philanthropies, and private companies, USU's SDGs Center contributes significantly to policy development related to sustainable development goals. The center plays a crucial role in identifying challenges and issues regarding SDG indicators in North Sumatra, leading to the creation of documents like the Regional Action Plan for SDGs until 2030. Moreover, USU's SDGs Center aids local entities in monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on activities supporting SDG indicators, offering recommendations for ongoing progress.

  • Initiate and Participate in Cross-sectoral Dialogue About The SDGs

    Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) plays a crucial role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia. The university actively engages in cross-sectoral dialogues to promote SDG achievement, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and activities initiated by various entities, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, philanthropies, and private companies. Throughout 2022, USU has organized 19 meetings, comprising dialogues, seminars, and workshops involving local governments, NGOs, philanthropies, and companies. Furthermore, USU's lecturers and students contribute to SDG acceleration through research and community service initiatives, fostering collaboration among all stakeholders. In 2022, USU allocated research and community service funds amounting to IDR 48.04 billion, reflecting a notable increase from IDR 18.67 billion, marking a growth of 157.35% compared to the previous year.

  • International Collaboration on Gathering or Measuring Data for The SDGs

    Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) actively engages in international collaborations to further the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Presently, USU collaborates with UCLGASPAC and AIESEC, two influential organizations dedicated to promoting sustainable development. UCLG ASPAC, as a regional section of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), serves as a key knowledge hub for local government issues in the Asia-Pacific region. USU's collaboration with UCLG ASPAC aims to advocate for local governments, accelerating progress toward SDG targets. AIESEC, a non-governmental organization affiliated with the United Nations, works in conjunction with USU students to form the AIESEC-USU community. This collaborative effort has successfully implemented various programs focused on advancing SDGs within the wider community.

    To establish itself as one of Indonesia's top research universities, USU encourages its lecturer and students to work together with lecturers or researchers from World's best universities.In 2022, USU has also established cooperation with various world universities such as Ningbo Polytechnic (China), Artesis Plantijn University College Antwerp (Belgium), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM, Malaysia), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (Philippines), Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (India), National College Of Nursing (Japan), University of California Riverside (US), James Cook University (Australia), China National Apparatus Research Institute (China), Islamic Economic Studies and Thought Center (Malaysia), etc. As a realization of the collaboration that has been implemented, in 2022, USU lecturers and students have conducted research collaborations with world-renowned universities such as Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Trengganu, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Pulau Penang, and Universiti Teknologi MARA, Perlis.

  • Collaboration with NGOs to tackle the SDGs

    USU actively engages in collaborations with NGOs, both domestically and internationally, contributing to student volunteering programs, research initiatives, and educational resource development. Through partnerships with organizations such as AIESEC, USU introduces students and the community to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In research programs, USU collaborates with notable entities like USAID, UCLGASPAC, Tanoto Foundation, Bakrie Foundation, JICA, and Erasmus+. Furthermore, USU collaborates with Erasmus Spirit in the health sector and the Monitoring Centre for Sustainable Tourism Observatory (MCSTO) in the tourism sector for the development of educational resources. Ongoing collaborations with JICA and the National Secretariat of the SDGs of Bappenas RI focus on assisting in monitoring and evaluating SDGs targets' achievement in North Sumatra Province.

The university is committed to fostering economic empowerment, reducing poverty, and enhancing educational, healthcare, and social opportunities. In 2022, USU granted scholarships to 7,499 students through support from various sources, including the government, philanthropic organizations like Tanoto Foundation, domestic NGOs such as Yayasan Pundi Amal, foreign entities like Van Deventer-Maas Stichting (Netherlands), banking institutions, waqf agencies, and local governments.     USU actively supports Indonesia's Zero Hunger program by leveraging agricultural research, food technology development, and community empowerment initiatives. The university collaborates with the North Sumatra National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to address stunting, encouraging students and lecturers to conduct research and community service supporting stunting reduction efforts.     USU's initiatives for SDG 14 focus on reducing marine pollution, preserving underwater biodiversity, and raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation. USU actively conducts educational campaigns on plastic waste reduction, advocates for sustainable fisheries management, and works to prevent water pollution. The university supports cleaning activities for beaches and water bodies, while also monitoring underwater ecosystems to identify threats and protect biodiversity. After over three years of establishment, PUI Mangrove USU has achieved recognition as the first Science and Technology Excellence Center (PUI) at Universitas Sumatera Utara, acknowledged by the Directorate of Research, Technology, and Community Service, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.   • Dedicated Courses that Address Sustainability and The SDGs

    All instructors adjust their instructional approaches in alignment with global issues, specifically focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each academic program includes discussions on relevant SDG-related topics within their respective courses. USU currently offers several undergraduate programs that directly address SDGs, including Environmental Engineering, Agribusiness, Food Technology, Water Resources Management, and Forestry. At the postgraduate level, USU provides the Village Regional Development (PWD) and Natural Resources and Environmental Management (PSL) Study Programs. Various courses in USU's programs are designed to address SDGs. For example, the Development Economics program features a Sustainable Development course covering green economy concepts, sustainable development for future generations, and strategies for managing natural resources and the environment while preserving environmental quality.     USU's commitment to educational outreach dates back to the 1990s, embracing a "University for Industry" role.
