The No Poverty program aims to end poverty completely in Indonesia and ensure everyone's access to basic resources, public services, decent work, and fair economic opportunities. To achieve this goal, collaborative efforts from government, community organizations, the private sector and individuals are necessary. Economic empowerment programs, poverty alleviation, and increasing access to education, health, and social services are the focus in efforts to achieve this goal. Universitas Sumatera Utara is committed to supporting programs to address poverty levels in Indonesia through research, community service and sustainable education.

  • Number of Low Income Students Receiving Financial Aid

    Universitas Sumatera Utara, as a public university, provides scholarships for low-income students. Currently, the total number of low-income students receiving scholarships is 8,176. These include the ongoing Bidikmisi Scholarship for the 2019 cohort at 16.7%, Bidikmisi Professional Scholarship at 0.7%, KIP Kuliah Scholarship for 2020 at 19.9%, KIP Kuliah Scholarship for 2021 at 20.3%, KIP Kuliah Scholarship for 2022 at 22.6%, Student Learning Aid Scholarship (BBM) at 6.4%, Bank Indonesia Scholarship at 1.3%, Karya Salemba Empat Scholarship at 2%, Achievement Scholarship at 3.2%, and Student Exchange Assistance at 1.6%

  • Targets to Admit Students Who Fall into The Bottom 20% of Household Income Group

    Universtas Sumatera Utara has a policy to accept and support students in the bottom 20% of household income groups. USU receives scholarship funding sources in collaboration with several parties such as KEMENDIKBUDRISTEK, PT ADARO INDONESIA, TANOTO FOUNDATION, VDMI, BANK INDONESIA, YAYASAN PUNDI AMAL, YAYASAN BAKTI BCA, BTN, etc. USU has also set high standards in providing comprehensive guidance on scholarships to students, providing resources and detailed information on the various types of scholarships available, including application requirements and procedures. A team of trained counselors is ready to help students understand the selection criteria, document preparation and stages of the selection process. Through this initiative, USU ensures that every student has access to the information necessary to pursue their education without significant financial barriers, allowing their potential to shine in the world of academia.

  • Graduation Targets for Students Who Fall into The Bottom 20% of Household Income Group

    With a firm commitment to eliminating financial barriers in access to higher education, Universitas Sumatera Utara has a mission to increase the number of students admitted from lower to middle class backgrounds and provide support to help students complete their studies. In 2022, USU will succeed in graduating 10,296 students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • Support for Students from Low Income Families

    Universitas Sumatera Utara provides facilities to help financially disadvantaged students adapt to campus life. USU provides free dormitories covering an area of 28,300 square meters, equipped with security guards, beds and mattresses. Free transportation in the form of 'Usu Bikes' which students can borrow and use. Free transportation via 'Lintas USU' buses consisting of 10 fleets equipped with air conditioning and ergonomic chairs. Community Health Center at a cost of Rp. 5,000 per hour for students. Free outpatient clinic to facilitate health services. Dental and oral health clinic. Public hospital with inpatient facilities that can be accessed free of charge for students with health insurance or at affordable rates. Open sports facilities include a volleyball court, tennis court, basketball court, futsal court, football field and mini stadium which can be accessed for free.

  • Programmes to Assist Students Who Fall into The Bottom 20% of Household Income Group

    Universitas Sumatera Utara offers several programs and initiatives to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds to successfully complete their studies. USU has a Student Activity Unit (UKM) in the form of an official "Gamadik" organization which provides guidance and support to scholarship recipients from underprivileged groups. This organization encourages students to be accomplished, creative, independent, ethical, responsible and socially insightful. Gamadik USU often holds seminars that focus on developing soft skills and hard skills, often involving its members as speakers. USU also provides an Integrated Service Unit (Unit Solusi Terpadu or ULT) which offers 38 different academic-related services to students, accessible for free.   • Schemes to Support Poor Students from Low or Lower-middle Income Countries

    Universitas Sumatera Utara has a strong commitment to supporting poor students from low or lower middle income countries. Through the free World Class University education program, USU provides equal opportunities to students who have financial limitations so they can develop their potential and contribute to building a better future. Foreign students from low or lower middle income countries participate in student exchange programs. In 2022, USU will provide opportunities to 148 students from 15 countries, namely (1) India; (2) Madagascar; (3) Philippines; (4) Pakistan; (5) Bangladesh; (6) Ethiopia; (7) Vietnam; (8) Myanmar; (9) Nigeria; (10) Cambodia; (11) Sri Lanka; (12) Kenya; (13) Democratic Republic of the Congo; (14) Nepal.

  • Assistance in The Local Community Supporting The Sustainable Businesses

    Universitas Sumatera Utara has an Erasmus+ project which aims to develop technical knowledge and entrepreneurship for local communities in North Sumatra Province. USU has a community service program that must be carried out every year. In 2022, USU will have implemented 306 community service programs involving a total cost of IDR. 7,214,693,000. Apart from that, USU has a Community Service Program (KKN) which provides opportunities for lecturers and students to contribute to rural development in North Sumatra Province. In the 2022 KKN program, USU involved 148 lecturers and 1,931 students in 148 activities. In 2022, USU will also have a Village Adoption program which is an interdisciplinary collaborative effort to overcome problems in selected villages. USU provides support to 11 villages in North Sumatra Province through this program.

  • Financial Assistance to The Local Community Assisting The Sustainable Businesses

    Universitas Sumatera Utara conducts a community service program targeting underprivileged communities every year. Through collaboration with governments and other organizations, the university focuses on education, health, the environment, and economic development. Lecturers and students are actively involved in providing innovative and sustainable solutions for the community. USU plays an active role in helping overcome the problems faced by the community by holding 130 community service activities aimed at helping the community build sustainable businesses involving 520 lecturers and 650 students. USU also has an Innovation Research Development Agency (BPRI) which is tasked with developing innovative start-up products from lecturers, students and micro, small and medium entrepreneurs. In 2022, BPRI USU will provide various forms of support and financial assistance to several start-up ventures.

  • Programmes to Improve Access to Basic Services

    Universitas Sumatera Utara actively organizes training programs and initiatives to increase access to basic services. This program consists of several initiatives, including:
    1. Basic Services Access Program for the academic community at USU: Providing health, education and security services. including dental and oral health clinics and hospitals, integrated service units to help the academic community, and providing scholarships to underprivileged students. Apart from that, there are also security personnel available throughout the USU campus and CCTV monitoring.
    2. Basic Service Access Program for the wider community: Through 84 community service projects involving 336 lecturers and 420 students. Also through the Real Work Lecture program which involves 148 lecturers and 1,931 students in 148 activities.
    3. Village Development Program: Supports the development of 11 partner villages in North Sumatra Province in the fields of health, entrepreneurship and tourism.
    Through these programs, Universitas Sumatera Utara is committed to increasing access to basic services and making positive contributions to society.

  • Participate in Policy Making to End Poverty

    Universitas Sumatera Utara actively participates in policy-making process at the local, regional, national and even global levels, in an effort to implement a comprehensive poverty alleviation program. USU lecturers have been entrusted as experts in various organizations who have responsibility for formulating policies at the local level, especially in North Sumatra Province, with a total of eight lecturers involved in 2022. They have played a role in formulating policy summaries and providing recommendations that have an impact on policies at local and national levels. Apart from that, this university actively collaborates with policy makers to implement concrete steps to eradicate poverty. USU is also actively involved in local, regional and national activities related to poverty alleviation, illustrating a firm commitment to this effort in all its dimensions.
