The Life Below Water program at Universitas Sumatera Utara focuses on efforts to reduce marine pollution, maintain underwater biodiversity, and increase awareness of the importance of preserving the marine environment. USU seeks to integrate sustainability principles by supporting beach and water clean-up activities, as well as monitoring the condition of underwater ecosystems to identify threats and take necessary steps to protect biodiversity.
Eduation program of freshwater ecosystem such as irigation and conservation is provided by USU, and also there are program that invite locals on their activity such as Pengabdian Masyarakat program, on 2022 Pengabdian Masyarakat Professor Mengabdi headed by Prof. Mohammad Basyuni S.Hut., M.Si Ph.D conduct ecological and hydrological-based planting activities, they invite the leader of local fisherman on this activities.
Community education programs related to sustainable fisheries are realized through training and socialization on sustainable fishery management, aquaculture, and tourism, given to local and national communities, on 2021 USU hosted an event called "Pembuatan Taman Wisata Edukasi Pertanian, Peternakan, dan Perikanan di Desa Batu Melenggang Kecamatan Hinai Kabupaten Langkat" the objective of this event is the creation of Education Park that aimed for children and teens.
On August 2022, USU's team headed by Vindy Rilani Manurung one of lecturer from faculty of Agriculture goes to Sorkam on Tapanuli Tengah they socialize one of knowledge on fishery through "Rumpon" program, Rumpon is one of environmental friendly fishing gear that using corral like item to catch a fish.
On 2022, USU's lecturer through Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat program hosted an educational event that educated group of fisherman on Desa Sentang, Serdangbedagai, through this event they educated the fishermen to process fishes they caught into fish flour that can be produced to be a feed for fishes, birds and cats besides that one of USU's lecturer Prof Hamidah also educated local fishermens to utilize the marine resources into product that have high profit product.
USU has formed a team for the Center for the Study of the Malacca Strait, acknowledging its global significance. Additionally, the university provides funding to strengthen the institutionalization of the Center of Excellence for Science, Technology, and Higher Education (PUI-PT IPTEKS) to better manage and utilize this strategic asset.
Universitas Sumatera Utara is commited to maintaining water ecosystem,one of activity for maintaining this ecosystem is by taking care of mangrove, on 2022 one of USU's lecturer gives a from faculty of forestry Dr. Muhammad Rizal S.Pi., M.Si gives a public lectures followed by students and lecturers from Fakultas Perikanan dan Ilmu Perikanan Universitas Teuku Umar. also on 2023 there's a research made by Faculty of Science and Mathematics that research about fitoplankton on Belawan river ecosystem, these fitoplankton have a positive effect to reduce waste inside the Belawan river.
The university supports and funds research activities conducted by lecturers, including projects aimed at using technology to minimize or prevent damage to aquatic ecosystems within the university environment. This initiative reflects a commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
Cooperation has been established by Universitas Sumatera Utara with PT. Sumatera Deli Lestari Indah in terms of waste treatment in the campus environment so that the waste does not interfere with aquatic ecosystems and environmental health.also in USU there's a study program called Laboratorium of Water Quality (Laboratorium kualitas air) that studying about the water quality this study program is from environment technic program bachelor degree.
in order to reduce the palstic waste, Lembaga Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (LPPM) USU use a method called Eco Brick, Ecobrick is method reducing plastic waste by using plastic bottle that have been filled by plastic in order to use it as a brick. Also As a form of support of reducing plastic waste in the campus environment, the University has collaborated with PT. Indonesia is Waste-Free so that universities and cooperation partners can synergize in terms of reducing plastic waste in the campus environment.
USU has a policy from 2019 called "Green Campus movement in Universitas Sumatera Utara Environment" that policy is managing environmental law to make USU as one of campus free from pollution land and water, also on 2021 USU establish cooperation with Pt. SUmatera Deli Medan in order to reduce waste and dangerous chemical on Universitas Sumatera Utara
USU's Talenta Team have been researching about how to minimise physical, chemical and/or biological alterations related to aquatic environment on November 2022 USU research about "Barcoding Shark and Stingray using Mitocondria C01" and on March 2023 Talenta team research about "Conservation Strategy of Molusca Species on Labuhanbatu Selatan"
USU's Talenta team had doing research on 2022 called "Studies of Morfometri and Quality Profile of Water from coastal lake on Danau Anak Laut, Aceh Singkil, Aceh Province", Morfometri is a method to measure and analysis quantitatively on dimension physics on fresh water, also USU on June 2022 one of lecturer on USU Mr. Onrizal, S.Hut, M.Si, Ph.D collaborated with local public and NGO, Academics, lawyer and government observing and maintaining Lubuk Kertang mangrove that can be useful for water biotope such as fish, crabs shrimp, and else
Universitas Sumatera Utara supports activities for programmes that encourage and maintain the management of equipment by conducting research into the Ecological Status and Water Quality Assessment of the Alas-Singkil River Basin, North Sumatra and Aceh Provinces; and Development of Magnets from Transition Metals (Co and Ni) Made from Local Raw Materials for Heavy Metal Wastewater Cleaning Materials.
Universitas Sumatera Utara lecturer hosted an Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) event on Serdangbedagai called "Pelestarian Lingkungan Dengan Penanaman Mangrove di Desa Sentang kecamatan Teluk Mengkudu" by planting 5000 mangrove seed in the effort for preserve environment, this planting event is useful for fishermen in order to avoid the abration on beach that occur every year. also this mangrove can be used for breeding fishes, and crab.
