Medan, 14 October 2024 - In an era defined by complex global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and the overconsumption of resources, the paradigm of sustainable development, as outlined by the United Nations in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has become an imperative. Recognizing this, higher education institutions like the University of Sumatera Utara (USU) bear a strategic responsibility to produce graduates who are not only academically excellent but also possess the awareness and competence to build a more sustainable future. This effort is realized, in part, through the delivery of courses that integrate the values and objectives of the SDGs into the curricula of its study programs.
Environmental Engineering — Courses on Water and Green Technology USU’s Environmental Engineering program offers courses that cover wastewater treatment processes (physical, chemical, and biological), design of treatment facilities, environmental monitoring, and links to public health. Students learn through labs and applied design tasks that address real local problems, preparing them to plan and operate sustainable infrastructure.
Economics & Business — Responsible and Sustainable Management The Faculty of Economics and Business integrates sustainability into teaching and student projects. The Entrepreneurship program teaches students to connect business planning with social responsibility and sustainable development, helping them design ventures that create positive environmental and social outcomes alongside economic value
The Faculty of Economics and Business embeds sustainability and social responsibility in teaching across programs. The Undergraduate Program in Development Economics states that graduates are prepared to address global development challenges and contribute to sustainable development. The Undergraduate Program in Management adopts outcome-based learning and prepares students for responsible decision-making in organizations.
The curriculum is designed to provide in-depth understanding and skills in solving complex problems in economic, financial, and social development. The main goal of this program is to create experts who have a strong understanding of global development challenges and can significantly contribute to economic growth and sustainable development.
Law — Environmental Law and Good Governance Universitas Sumatera Utara’s Faculty of Law offers clear learning paths in environmental law from bachelor to doctoral level. Undergraduate students build legal foundations and can take subjects that introduce environmental regulation and governance. At master’s level, students may choose concentrations that include environmental law, while the doctoral track develops advanced research on law and policy for natural resources and environmental management. These programs aim to prepare graduates who can design and enforce fair, sustainable rules for society.
Teaching connects legal theory with practice. Courses discuss how laws are made, how they are enforced, and why they matter for public health, water, waste, land use, and climate. Students learn tools for compliance, permitting, and dispute resolution, and they analyse real cases from Indonesia and abroad. Faculty expertise includes international and environmental law, giving students guidance from academics who publish and supervise work on climate and environmental justice topics.
Learning also moves beyond the classroom. Lecturers and students run community outreach on legal perspectives in waste management and related topics, training local stakeholders to understand rights, duties, and practical steps for better environmental outcomes. These activities help students practice communication, policy advising, and ethical engagement with communities and local government.
Across these levels, the Faculty of Law links its curriculum and activities to the university’s sustainability mission, including peace, justice, and strong institutions. The result is a graduate profile that can advise government, communities, and businesses on how to build and enforce laws that protect people and the environment.
