Through these combined efforts, USU continues to advance SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by actively reducing social, economic, and geographic barriers to education. The university’s comprehensive framework also reinforces SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality), demonstrating its institutional leadership in ensuring that access to higher education is fair, transparent, and inclusive.

Medan, Indonesia — March 15, 2024 — Universitas Sumatera Utara has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering inclusivity and diversity by implementing comprehensive strategies for recruiting students, staff, and faculty from underrepresented groups. This institutional commitment aims to reduce barriers and promote equitable access to education and employment opportunities for all members of the university community, and reflects planned, institution-wide actions to recruit and support underrepresented students, staff, and faculty.

Inclusive Admission Programs for Students
Universitas Sumatera Utara actively participates in various national admission schemes, prioritizing students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The university’s efforts include programs specifically designed to support students from low-income families and remote areas. In 2024, 27.6% of applicants through the National Selection for State Universities were recipients of the Indonesia Smart Card for College program, aimed at assisting economically marginalized students.


Additionally, in 2024, Universitas Sumatera Utara provided the Student Learning Assistance Scholarship to learners facing economic challenges, especially in rural and underserved regions. The scholarship targets students from underserved regions, focusing on providing access to quality education for those from rural and economically disadvantaged areas.

Supporting Students with Disabilities
Universitas Sumatera Utara now enrolls 11 students with disabilities.
