Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is pioneering a sweeping transformation in campus mobility, actively steering its community away from fossil-fuel dependence toward low-emission transport options. The strategic implementation of zero-emission infrastructure and transport policies confirms USU’s dedicated commitment to reducing its institutional carbon footprint.

The university operates a core public transport service, the LinUS shuttle, which is both free and regular. This vital service utilizes 10 buses and covers 16 designated stops, offering frequent daily routes exclusively for students and staff. This system is crucial in actively reducing the need for private vehicles on campus, thereby mitigating congestion and cutting down on vehicular emissions.

Incentives and Infrastructure Support
To further incentivize sustainable commuting, USU provides tangible, low-emission alternatives:

  • Free bicycles are readily available for students, and electric motorbikes are supplied for the daily mobility needs of staff.
  • These options are heavily supported by physical infrastructure, including designated bike parking areas, covered pedestrian paths for comfort, and accessibility features like guiding blocks and ramps for persons with disability.

Restricting Private Vehicle Dominance
USU strategically restricts the use of private automobiles to reinforce its sustainability goals. The university enforces a restricted car access policy for students and has successfully decreased the amount of available on-ground parking space by 10–30% over the last three years. This policy is complemented by car-free zones, making low-emission options the most practical and convenient way to travel on campus.
