MEDAN – The Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) continues to strengthen its steps in supporting environmental preservation and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a concrete implementation, USU has officially enacted the Institutional Sustainable Procurement and Purchasing Policy across all university working units.

This policy is designed to ensure that all procurement activities within USU do not only prioritize functionality and cost efficiency but also carefully consider long-term environmental, social, and economic impacts.

Prioritizing Eco-Friendly Procurement

In its latest policy, USU has set rigorous standards for vendors and partners to meet specific sustainability criteria, including:
1. Resource Efficiency: Prioritizing electronic equipment with low energy consumption and the use of recyclable materials.
2. Waste Reduction: Minimizing single-use plastics in all institutional activities and supporting vendors who utilize sustainable packaging schemes.
3. Social Responsibility: Ensuring all partners comply with labor regulations and applicable Occupational Health and Safety (K3) standards.

The Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., stated that this move is a vital part of USU’s transformation toward becoming a globally responsible World Class University. "We want to ensure that every asset entering our campus environment has the smallest possible carbon footprint," he remarked.

Transparency and Document Access

To maintain public transparency and provide a clear roadmap for partners, all policy documents and technical guidelines for sustainable procurement are now openly accessible. This initiative is expected to help suppliers align their product specifications with the "green standards" established by the university.
