Medan, November 3, 2024 — The University of Sumatra Utara (USU) continues to make significant contributions to the local and global cultural landscape through its active engagement in the performing arts. With a deep institutional commitment to preserving and promoting Indonesia’s diverse cultural heritage, the university regularly organizes and hosts a wide range of public performances involving student choirs, traditional music ensembles, dance troupes, and theatre productions.
Global Reach: Indonesia’s Cultural Ambassador In 2024, the university stepped decisively onto the international stage by participating in the prestigious Indonesian Cultural Night held in Bangkok, Thailand. A large delegation featuring 165 student performers showcased the rich tapestry of traditional Indonesian music, dance, and art forms at the KBank Siam Pic-Ganesha Theatre. This high-profile event not only highlighted the artistic talents nurtured by the institution but also reinforced its crucial role as a cultural ambassador for Indonesia globally.
Fostering Regional and International Diversity The university’s commitment to culture is deeply rooted in its local initiatives. The Faculty of Cultural Sciences organizes several annual events that actively promote regional and international diversity:
International Summer Course on North Sumatra’s Cultural Diversity: This program introduces Malay and Batak heritage to an international audience, promoting a deeper understanding of the region's rich traditions.
Japanese Language Presentation Competition: Held in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and the Consulate General of Japan, this event serves as a platform for students to showcase their language and cultural skills.
Bunkasai Festival: A vibrant celebration of Japanese music, theatre, and culture, featuring student performances in the performing arts.
Sustaining Creativity: Campus and Public Venues Student participation extends beyond the cultural faculties. Students across various disciplines contribute to annual campus events like the Annual Sports and Arts Festival, alongside numerous musical and theatrical productions staged at the university's auditorium and various public cultural venues. This robust schedule provides students with continuous opportunities for creative expression and public performance.
Crucially, the university’s arts and cultural events are universally open to the public, often offering free admission. By fostering this inclusivity, the University of Sumatra Utara ensures that the local community has full access to high-quality cultural offerings, making the institution a vital hub for cultural exchange and community enrichment.
