University Anti-Poverty Programmes

Our university has the policy to accept and support students who fall into the bottom 20% of household income group. Our university also participates in supporting students from families affected by pandemic Covid-19. Evidences are provided below for number of students who are supported by our university policy in supporting low income families.
As a public university, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has a mission to increase number of students to be accepted from low income families and focus on the completion of their studies. Every year, USU graduates 9,599 - 11,353 students including the low income students.
USU provides 3 dormitories free of charge for students from low income families. They have area of 28,300 square meters and capacities for 758 Students. USU also provides 8 buses for local transportation within campus for students.
Currently we provide schemes for students from low income countries as designed in our world class university program.

Community Anti-Poverty Programmes

USU has project funded by Erasmus+ to develop social entreprenuership for local community. We have an excellent community services involves 2079 lecturer and 2630 students in 514 activities. USU directly support 9 villages in other community services program.
We have developed a program called Desa Binaan to directly support nine villages within Sumatera Utara Province involving 268 lecturers and 45 students.
The Institute for Community Service/Service to the University of North Sumatra (LPPM-USU) was established on December 16, 1980 based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 1418/PT05/SK/C.1980. Since USU became PT. BHMN (Year 2005), Research Institute and Community Service Institute are united under the name Institute for Research and Community Service which is led by a Director, and each institution is led by a Chair and Secretary. Organizationally, the Director's role is more of a coordinating function, while the Head of Research and Community Service Institutions, Head of Center/Puslit, and Head of Unit is more operational in accordance with their respective fields of work, duties and functions.
USU has involves intensely in fighting poverty within local, regional and national level. USU also contribute in fighthing pandemic Covid-19 as several of USU facilities has been used to treat patients and provide research to develop tools and equipments to decrease the pandemic effects within communities.
