Community service activities are one of the obligations that must be carried out by every lecturer at universities as part of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. The proposed activity of this Community Service Team is titled “Strengthening Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities through Political Education in the 2024 Election in Medan City.” The low participation of persons with disabilities in elections is an issue that requires serious attention.
Several studies show that society is not yet sensitive to the political rights of persons with disabilities. In addition, the lack of accessibility in elections for persons with disabilities also poses a challenge. Persons with disabilities are one of the largest minority groups in Medan City.
Therefore, this community service aims to provide understanding on strengthening accessibility for persons with disabilities through political education in the election in Medan City. The participatory learning and action method was applied through lectures and participatory discussions. First, the activity was carried out in collaboration with the Indonesian Blind Association (Pertuni) Medan City, which included learning about political education. Second, it improved the understanding of persons with disabilities regarding the importance of exercising their voting rights. Third, it provided understanding of political accessibility and political rights for persons with disabilities.
The results of this community service recommend that participants increase their understanding of the rights and obligations of citizens to vote. To ensure that the implementation of political education runs smoothly, continuous guidance and assistance are needed for the Indonesian Blind Association (Pertuni) Medan City.
