By pairing scholarship with practical outreach, USU strengthened public learning, widened inclusion, and deepened engagement across North Sumatra—showing how a university can be both a centre of ideas and a neighbour that shows up.

Medan, August 13, 2024 – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has aggressively extended its mission beyond traditional lecture halls in 2024, hosting an impressive total of 87 free public lectures, community education programmes, and cultural events. Led by faculties, research centres, and student organisations, the initiative’s goal was clear: to make high-quality learning, critical knowledge, and cultural enrichment easy to find, easy to join, and entirely free of charge for the wider community. The programs successfully welcomed thousands of participants from local schools, neighbourhood communities, and partner institutions, ensuring relevance across different ages and societal needs. Formats varied widely, ranging from hands-on workshops and classroom-style sessions to large-scale exhibitions and public forums.

Highlighting Practical Impact and Global Dialogue

The series included several landmark events that married scholarship with practical outreach:

  • Agro-Innovation and Health: The highly successful “JUNGFOOD EX-FEST” drew over 2,000 visitors. The event combined demonstrations on agro-innovation and sustainable food practices with practical health education, offering tangible benefits to attendees.
  • International Perspectives: The USU Public Lecture Series convened expert speakers from across ASEAN and Europe. Discussions focused on high-priority topics with direct social impact, including food security, mental health support, and navigating digital transformation.

Bridging Expertise and Community Needs

USU faculties actively leveraged their expertise to address local challenges:

  • Digital Literacy and Environment: Faculties delivered essential digital literacy training for students and teachers, alongside crucial environmental seminars addressing local sustainability challenges. Health awareness sessions provided preventive guidance and practical tools directly to families.
  • Cultural Preservation: The Faculty of Cultural Sciences played a key role by hosting heritage exhibitions and traditional performances. These events successfully drew new, diverse audiences to classic repertoires, initiating public dialogue on cultural preservation, identity, and language.

Perhaps most crucially, the medical and law faculties utilized the outreach strategy to deliver free health clinics and legal aid sessions. These services offered concrete support—from screenings and referrals to legal guidance—effectively bridging academic knowledge with pressing day-to-day community needs.

A Commitment to Inclusion and Outreach

USU ensured that all events were free to attend and held in accessible venues. By implementing clear wayfinding, barrier-free spaces, and inclusive facilitation, the university successfully removed potential obstacles for first-time visitors and underserved groups.

To maximize reach, programmes were systematically announced and archived via the USU website and official social media channels, allowing audiences to track schedules, register easily, and revisit materials after the events concluded.

By pairing rigorous scholarship with tangible public outreach, USU has strengthened public learning, widened social inclusion, and deepened engagement across North Sumatra, demonstrating how a major university can be both a centre of global ideas and a supportive, responsive neighbour.
