Medan, Indonesia, 18 August 2024 — Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) continues to extend its leadership in sustainable water management beyond the campus through a series of community service programmes, partnerships, and education initiatives that engage the public in responsible water use. Coordinated by the Lembaga Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (LPPM USU), these efforts are a core part of the university’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the advancement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).

Empowering communities through service and learning

USU’s sustainability reporting for 2024 highlights a diverse range of community service programmes focused on water conservation and sanitation. These initiatives are designed collaboratively with local communities and typically involve students in fieldwork, research, and hands‑on training.

Activities include workshops on water‑efficient agriculture, wastewater management, and safe drinking‑water access, giving students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge while helping residents adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives.

Collaborations for practical impact

To increase the impact of its outreach, USU works with government institutions, NGOs, and private‑sector partners to design and implement water‑conservation interventions outside the campus. Notable activities include:

  • installing rainwater‑harvesting systems,
  • promoting reusable water containers to reduce single‑use plastics, and
  • running public education campaigns that encourage responsible water behaviour at home and at work.

Through these collaborations, water‑saving innovations developed at USU, such as low‑cost harvesting units and small‑scale filtration systems, are adapted and applied in both urban neighbourhoods and rural communities across North Sumatra.

Integrating research and public education

USU’s sustainability research provides a strong foundation for its community programmes. Studies on pollution prevention, irrigation optimisation, and household‑level conservation technologies are translated into training modules and outreach materials for community partners.

Researchers and students frequently conduct participatory demonstrations, helping residents monitor water quality, manage domestic wastewater, and rehabilitate local water sources. This approach ensures that scientific knowledge is not confined to academic publications but turned into practical tools that communities can use.

Regional leadership in sustainable water management

Through its Green Campus Programme, USU also influences public behaviour more broadly by organising seminars, policy circulars, and joint awareness campaigns that promote resource efficiency and water stewardship beyond the university grounds. By integrating off‑campus outreach, applied research, and infrastructure development, USU plays a proactive regional role in promoting sustainable water use and strengthening environmental resilience.

A model for collaborative sustainability

USU’s approach shows how a university can connect education, research, and community action to create measurable environmental impact. By combining policy implementation with practical engagement on the ground, Universitas Sumatera Utara continues to inspire responsible water management practices that benefit not only its academic community but also the wider society it serves.
