Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) demonstrated that it both initiates and participates Medan, 28 November 2024 ‑sector dialogue on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a convener, USU brought together government agencies, NGOs, industry, and academics to exchange evidence, align policies, and co‑design solutions spanning biodiversity, sustainable industry, green buildings, and landscape conservation.
USU hosted the 9th Asian Primate Symposium (APS) under the theme Living in Harmony with Primates (23–27 Nov). Organized with NGO partners—the Orangutan Information Center, Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari, Yayasan KAIRA, and FORINA—the symposium gathered representatives from 20 countries and Indonesian authorities, including the Head of the North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Center. The program emphasized science–policy–community collaboration for protecting primates and their habitats, underscoring SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 17 (Partnerships).
Earlier in the year, USU’s Center for Excellence in Mangrove Science and Technology convened the 6th ICONART 2024 hybrid conference at Grandhika Hotel Medan (27 Aug). With the theme Natural Resources and Technology for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals through Academic, Industry, and Community, ICONART was co‑organized with the Nationwide University Network in Indonesia (NUNI), Universitas Hasanuddin, and the Malaysia Green Technology Society. The format and partnerships made ICONART a practical platform for research–industry–community dialogues on resilient, SDG‑aligned innovation.
From Forests to Livelihoods: How USU–IPOSS Advances High-Impact, Sustainable Palm Oil
On 4 Nov 2024, USU welcomed Indonesia Palm Oil Strategic Studies (IPOSS) for a cross-disciplinary discussion themed “Palm Oil Sustainability: Law, Environment and Agricultural Perspective,” held at Faculty of Economics and Business. USU’s Rector emphasized the forum’s aim to produce practical guidelines that balance legal compliance, environmental stewardship, and socio-economic outcomes.
