Medan, October 30, 2024 — Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has asserted its strong commitment to ethical employment practices by actively eradicating and opposing forced labor, modern slavery, human trafficking, and child labor. The university has implemented clear, actionable policies and practices to ensure these critical issues are addressed both within its institution and the broader community, aligning with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
Transparent Recruitment and Prohibition of Child Labor
USU has established clear recruitment practices that strictly prohibit the employment of minors. All job announcements are made transparently through various media outlets, including the internet and newspapers, ensuring the process is open and accessible to all eligible candidates. By enforcing a policy that mandates all hires must be over the age of 18, the university guarantees that no child labor is involved in its workforce.
Upholding Employee Rights
The university’s commitment to fairness and the elimination of exploitation is codified in Rector Regulation No. 21 of 2017, which guarantees the rights and welfare of all employees. This regulation provides a robust legal framework that ensures staff protection and prevents any form of exploitation within the university. USU stands firm in its opposition to modern slavery and human trafficking, ensuring that all workers are treated with dignity and respect.
Collaborations for Women and Child Protection
In addition to internal policies, USU actively collaborates with external partners, specifically the Department of Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection, and Family Planning in North Sumatra. This vital partnership focuses on the empowerment and protection of women, as well as safeguarding the rights of children, thereby helping to prevent child labor and other related abuses in the surrounding region.
Advocacy for Sustainable Development Goals
Further reinforcing its commitment, USU’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Center actively promotes and advocates against forced labor, human trafficking, and child labor. By formally aligning its efforts with global sustainability goals, the university ensures that these human rights concerns are consistently addressed at both the institutional and societal levels.
Through these combined initiatives, USU demonstrates a comprehensive approach to tackling severe labor abuses, committing to ethical practices, protecting employee rights, and promoting social justice. These policies ensure the university operates as a responsible and ethical institution, upholding human dignity in all its operations.
