These efforts directly help shape policies and programs that meet important SDG goals at both the national and regional levels.
Universitas Sumatera Utara Collaborates with North Sumatra Provincial Government to Promote Circular Economy through Integrated Waste Management
Universitas Sumatera Utara has launched an Integrated Waste Management Site (IWMS) as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and circular economy principles. The IWMS, fully supported by the North Sumatra Provincial Government, is managed by the USU Circularity Center and focuses on processing waste in an integrated manner. This initiative goes beyond waste disposal, serving as a research hub that involves five USU faculties in collaborative studies aimed at improving waste management practices. Governor of North Sumatra, Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution, highlighted the importance of community involvement in waste management, emphasizing that creating economic value from waste will drive active participation. This initiative is a key step in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aligns with the provincial government's efforts to promote sustainability across the region.
The success of this project at USU will serve as a model for expanding waste management innovations to 10 other regions. As part of the North Sumatra Provincial Government’s Medium-Term Development Plan, USU’s waste management system is set to be replicated in ten other cities and districts across the province. This collaboration is expected to provide not only environmental benefits but also economic value, with the potential for waste processing to create revenue-generating opportunities through innovations like maggot-based organic waste treatment and the conversion of inorganic waste into oil and diesel. By integrating circular economy principles into regional waste management, this initiative demonstrates USU’s leadership in sustainable development and offers a replicable model for other areas in Sumatra.
USU Supports Batubara Regency in Developing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Action Plan
Universitas Sumatera Utara has officially launched the process of developing the Regional Action Plan (RAD) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in collaboration with the Government of Batubara Regency, North Sumatra. The kick-off event was held on May 4, 2024, and aims to guide Batubara in formulating a comprehensive strategy for achieving the SDGs by 2030. This collaborative effort between USU and the local government is a significant step in ensuring that Batubara aligns its regional development initiatives with the global SDG framework.
The RAD SDGs will be structured around a participatory approach involving key stakeholders, including government entities, the private sector, NGOs, and academics. USU, with its expertise and resources, is committed to supporting the Batubara Regency in integrating the SDGs into their local policies, projects, and activities. The goal is to create a sustainable and inclusive development model that not only addresses global targets but also aligns with local priorities. This initiative is part of USU’s ongoing efforts to contribute to the national and regional development agenda and enhance the implementation of SDGs in North Sumatra.
Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) confirms direct involvement and input into Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) policy design and delivery. The university’s actions span the full policy cycle: identifying local challenges with communities and agencies, co‑creating strategies, building models and scenarios for decision‑making, and strengthening monitoring, reporting, and adaptive management.
