Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., emphasized the importance of these initiatives: “USU graduates are not only academically strong but socially responsible. By participating in Kampus Mengajar and other government-supported programs, our students are trained to become educators who inspire the next generation.”
Medan, Indonesia — July 15, 2024 Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) continues to strengthen its contribution to Indonesia’s education sector by producing graduates equipped with teaching skills and pedagogical competence to educate at the primary and secondary school levels. In 2024, USU recorded a total of 10,866 graduates across all study levels, with a significant proportion coming from teaching-oriented programmes under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB), and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) — disciplines that integrate education and communication skills in their curriculum.
Graduates with Teaching Competence
Graduates from USU’s Mathematics Education, Science Education, and Language Education programmes are formally qualified to teach at the primary and junior secondary levels. Based on academic data, approximately 22% of graduates from FMIPA and FIB in 2024 completed educational modules and teaching practicums that included instructional design, classroom management, and curriculum development.
These graduates are trained not only in their subject expertise but also in pedagogical methods aligned with national education standards, making them well-prepared to take on teaching roles that enhance literacy, numeracy, and character education in Indonesian schools.
MBKM Kampus Mengajar Initiative
USU actively participates in the national Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative, particularly the Kampus Mengajar programme coordinated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. Through this programme, hundreds of USU students each year are deployed to assist teachers in elementary schools, especially in rural or under-resourced areas.
These students receive pre-deployment training on child-centered learning, literacy and numeracy instruction, and inclusive classroom practices. Upon completion, participants gain official certification and valuable teaching experience that enhances their employability as future educators.
According to the Directorate of Student Affairs (Ditmawa USU), the programme not only strengthens academic skills but also cultivates empathy, leadership, and communication — essential attributes for graduates entering the education sector.
Supporting SDG 4: Quality Education
USU’s integration of teaching competencies and MBKM experiences underscores its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by preparing skilled graduates who can directly contribute to improving the quality of basic education.
Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., emphasized the importance of these initiatives:
“USU graduates are not only academically strong but socially responsible. By participating in Kampus Mengajar and other government-supported programs, our students are trained to become educators who inspire the next generation.”
Through these programmes, Universitas Sumatera Utara continues to play a vital role in shaping a qualified and compassionate teaching workforce, ensuring that every child has access to quality education delivered by competent and dedicated educators.
