Medan, North Sumatra – December 20, 2024 – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is demonstrating that its commitment to diversity is not just rhetoric; it is actively embedding a culture of inclusion through concrete policy and comprehensive practice. The institution ensures equal access to all academic and non-academic activities, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, gender, disability, or background, making this principle a non-negotiable part of its operations.

Mandated by Law and Reinforced by Decree

This commitment to equitable access is legally binding. USU's dedication is firmly grounded in the Academic Regulation No. 13 of 2022, a comprehensive guideline that is further reinforced by the Rector’s Decree No. 459/UN5.1.R/SK/SPB/2023. These documents serve as the authoritative legal framework steering the university's inclusion and accessibility policies, ensuring equality is mandated from the highest level of governance.

From Policy to Practical Access

USU translates these high-level principles into tangible action by maintaining open and barrier-free access across all study programmes, campus events, and crucial community outreach initiatives. This commitment ensures that the university’s resources are available to the broadest possible cross-section of society.

Crucially, the university maintains a robust feedback loop to continuously refine its efforts. Regular monitoring is carried out through detailed surveys, focused group discussions , and feedback sessions that actively involve students, staff, and external partners. This mechanism ensures that policies are responsive to the real-world needs of the diverse campus community.

2024: Infrastructure and Culture Building

The results of these monitoring efforts were evident in 2024, leading to marked improvements in several key areas:

  • Disability Services were significantly enhanced, alongside the strategic design of more inclusive events and improved campus facilities.
  • Efforts to enhance cultural representation within campus activities were also expanded, actively celebrating the diverse backgrounds of the university community.

Furthermore, USU actively invests in maintaining this inclusive environment by conducting annual inclusivity training sessions focused on accessibility standards and non-discrimination best practices for its entire staff body.

Perhaps the most compelling indicator of a deeply rooted inclusive culture is the active participation of student-led groups. Organizations like the Student Forum for Disability Care and USU Inclusion Ambassadors work diligently to strengthen campus-wide inclusion initiatives from the ground up, ensuring the mandate is lived and practiced daily.

Taken together, USU's approach presents a strong model of an institution leveraging clear legal frameworks and active community engagement to make tangible progress on accessibility and equality, aligning powerfully with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4: Quality Education).
