Medan, 10 November 2024 Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is taking tangible, structured steps to promote sustainable commuting across its large campus, proving that its commitment to reducing carbon emissions from transportation is both measurable and actionable.

The university currently champions a robust, zero-emission infrastructure. USU operates eight free shuttle buses daily, offering regular transport for students and staff. This public transport backbone is complemented by facilities that encourage personal low-emission travel, including free bicycles for students and electric motorbikes for staff. To support this crucial shift, the campus maintains extensive infrastructure, such as dedicated bicycle parking, pedestrian-friendly pathways, and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations.
Strategic Measures and Future Targets
USU has actively introduced measures to discourage the use of private, fossil-fuel vehicles. Data confirms that parking for private cars is strictly limited to less than 4% of the total campus area, a key strategy to rapidly shift commuter habits. Furthermore, the campus environment is already low-emission, with 318 Zero Emission Vehicles operating daily.
Looking ahead, USU is formalizing its ambition with clear, quantifiable goals. The university has established a 2025–2030 target to substantially enhance its sustainable mobility footprint:
- Reduce overall transportation-related emissions by 15%.
- Increase the sustainable commuter mode share (walking, cycling, and university shuttle use) by 25%.
These ambitious targets will strategically guide future planning, ensuring the continued expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure and further reductions in parking availability. USU’s systematic approach demonstrates a sustained and verifiable commitment to low-carbon mobility and responsible campus development.
