Medan, November 26, 2024 – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has reaffirmed its deep commitment to labor rights, formally recognizing and supporting the freedom of association and collective bargaining for all employees, including women and international staff. This commitment is enshrined in the university’s official regulations and proactive practices, ensuring equal opportunities for staff to participate actively in professional and social organizations.
Protecting Labor Rights Through Institutional Regulations
USU guarantees robust labor rights for its employees primarily through Rector Regulation No. 21 of 2017. This regulation explicitly states that all staff members are free to associate in professional or scientific organizations, without discrimination based on gender or nationality. This provision applies universally to all employees, including women and international staff, ensuring a truly inclusive approach to labor rights.
Active Participation in Professional and Social Organizations
In practice, USU staff members are actively involved in various professional bodies, reflecting the university's endorsement of academic and socially-driven engagement:
Professional Affiliations: Lecturers in the Faculty of Economics and Business, for example, are affiliated with the Indonesian Economists Association and the Indonesian Accounting Lecturers Association.
Social Advocacy: Other staff members are involved in organizations promoting gender equality and child protection, demonstrating a commitment beyond purely academic pursuits.
Supporting Collective Welfare and Grievances
Beyond facilitating professional associations, USU proactively supports collective welfare and protection:
Internal Cooperatives: The university supports internal cooperatives that offer financial services, savings programs, and welfare assistance, reinforcing the institution's commitment to solidarity and employee well-being.
Protective Mechanisms: USU maintains strong labor rights protections through mechanisms such as the Whistleblower System and structured grievance channels, ensuring employees have confidential avenues to raise concerns regarding workplace issues.
Aligning with Global Standards
USU’s policies align directly with International Labour Organization (ILO) principles and contribute significantly to Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By providing staff with the freedom to join professional organizations and participate in collective welfare initiatives, USU strengthens its commitment to labor rights in line with international standards.
Through these policies and practices, Universitas Sumatera Utara demonstrates its commitment to upholding labor rights and creating an inclusive, fair workplace for all staff, regardless of gender, nationality, or professional role.
