Water Usage and Care

Facilities To Treat Waste Water

USU has wastewater treatment plants to treat wastewater. This is located near USU hospital, at USU Dental and Oral Hospital, and in the USU Department of Environmental Engineering of USU

Prevent Polluted Water

USU has wastewater treatment plants to to prevent polluted water from entering the water system, including pollution caused by accidents and incidents at the university?. This is located near USU hospital, at USU Dental and Oral Hospital, and in the USU Department of Environmental Engineering of USU

Free Drinking Water For Students

USU has a drinkable water faucet facility for students, staff and visitors which can be found, among others, at the USU Faculty of Public Health, which is regularly monitored and maintained by PDAM Tirtanadi.

Building Standards to Minimise Water Usage

Some buildings in USU has equipped Water Efficient Appliances, such as sensor water faucet and urinal flushing system.

Plant Landscapes to Minimise Water Usage

USU has not utilized plants to minimize water use but there are other alternatives to minimize water use such as reusing water through rainwater harvesting and reservoirs for conservation. USU has rainwater harvesting located in the Faculty of Engineering, Center for Information Studies, and near the Central Administration Building. The use of the water is for watering plants and washing vehicles. In addition, at USU Hospital there is also water recycling, as was done by the USU Faculty of Medicine by storing water used for ablution in one tub and then the water is used again to water the yard and plants. USU has several infiltration ponds, bio pore, infiltration wells, and reservoirs that are useful for water conservation on campus. The infiltration ponds are located in the Central Library, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Pharmacy, TriDharma Educational Forest, and the Tambunan A Experimental Garden.

Water Re-Use

Policy to Maximise Water Reuse

Through Greencampus initiative, USU has policy to promote water efficiency, this policy include water reuse accros the university.

2019

The policy can be found on USU Rector Policy No. 3

Measuring The Reuse Of Water Across The University

USU measures water reuse by comparing the use of clean water from PDAM from year to year. PDAM (Regional Supply Water Company) is the main supplier of clean water on the USU Campus. PDAM distributes clean water for the needs of buildings at USU such as departments, laboratories, student dormitories, sports buildings, academic centre bureaus, etc. There is an increase in the average use of clean water from 2021 to 2022 because in 2022 the new normal concept has begun to be implemented at USU after the pandemic. The need for water will increase in 2022 because, during face-to-face lectures, the health protocol for washing hands is still being applied at USU.

Water In Community

Learn About Good Water Management

USU has Community Service Institute (LPPM). The institute regularly provides some funding and designates the staff to do community services. Some of the them include learn about good water management. Attached is an example report.

Promote Water Usage

On Campus, there is the installation of saving water campaign stickers in toilets of several faculties such as the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Public Health and USU Hospital and there is a circular letter from the Dean of the USU Faculty of Medicine regarding water savings. In the wider community, USU has Community Service Institute (LPPM) to provide some funding and designate the staff to promote conscious water usage in community services.

Water Conservation

USU supports water conservation off campus through Community Service Institute (LPPM). One example activity is community service to build proper sanitation facilities for the community on Dusun VI, Percut Village, Percut Sei Tuan district, conducted a test for groundwater quality used by the community and provide a water pump to simplify the process to get clean water and prevent contaminant.

Water Extraction

USU has several infiltration ponds, biopori, infiltration wells and reservoirs that are utilise sustainable water extraction technologies on university. The infiltration ponds are located at the Central Library, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Pharmacy, TriDharma Educational Forest, and the Tambunan Experimental Garden. Through these programs, USU could conserve more than 50% of water.

Cooperation On Water Security

USU collaborates with the Perusahaan Umum (Perum) Jasa Tirta I in managing water resources in the Lake Toba area through technical assistance and inspection of the protection activities of the Lake Toba Catchment Area, Toba Regency. USU has a partnership too with USAID to implement of KKMA-RA program through capacity building and construction on infiltration ponds to local government in North Sumatera.
