University Measures Towards Affordable and Clean Energy

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) as a body has two documents related to planning that ensure all infrastructure development following the standard of the energy efficiency. The first related document is Five years planning development (namely Renstra USU 2020-2024) and Rector Policy number 3 Year 2019 about Green Campus development of Universitas Sumatera Utara. It is also followed and implemented by all faculties within Universitas Sumatera Utara

2015

The policy (5 Years Planning) was firtsly created in 2014. This document is five years planning. In addition the Rector Policy No 3 Year 2019 was firstly created in 2019

2020

The document planning is reviewed in every 5 years. The last reviewed year is in 2020
In the Policy Rector No 3 Year 2019 it is stated that the existing building need to be upgraded to a higher energy efficiency. Some evidence can be seen in the news or related research attached in the evidence.
There are several carbon emission sources in campus of Universitas Sumatera Utara. The main sources are electricity production and transportation sector. The SDG center of Universitas Sumatera Utara has actively promoted low carbon transportation and installing solar PV in effort to reduce fossil fuel from generating electricity. USU also usesIPCC method to estimate the use of carbon footprint in USU. Other than that, USU also recently conduct PUI (Center of Science and Technology excellence) that strives towards carbon management and reducing carbon dioxide emissions named PUI Carbon USU
Universitas Sumatera Utara has been reviewing its energy consumption within its center of administration building. The result has been published and attached on USU Green Campus website.
USU has policy on energy efficiency by issuing policy to reduce overall energy consumption. following the policy, some actions that have been carried out is by installing solar street light panels and gradually building solar panels in each building such as the Main Administration Building, USU's Mechanical Engineering Laboratory and Rooftop of Electrical ENgineering Department from the Faculty of Engineering, and solar powered lights along Universiats Street. The data shows that there is 37,843kWh renewable energy production per year gaining from these implementation. Furthermore, most of USU's buildings use natural sunlight for interior lighting and this greatly reduces the iuse of energy consumption.

Energy Use Density

Total Energy Used

392.8405 kWh

It is stated on the USU sustainability report 2021

University Floor Space

223,514 m3

Energy and the Community

USU has a body named as Community Service Institute (LPPM). This Institute periodically and continuously provides funding and encourages the academic staff of USU to implement community services and some of the themes include energy efficiency and clean energy. Attached are some reports of the community services related to the energy efficiency and clean energy, either from the university or from the policy in the faculty (e.g. in Faculty of Law in the attached evidence )
USU has Research institute and Community Service (LP and LPPM) Institute that are supporting the community of Indonesia to pledge towards 100% renewable and clean energy. events and group discussions related to promote renewable energy and is implemented gradually and continuously by the university of Sumatera Utara (see evidence from news and report attached)
The community service institute of USU (LPPM) provide direct service to local and national industries to improve energy efficiency and is implemented by the university of Engineering. Attached is an example of report of energy audit provided by USU to Pertamina (Indonesia national oil company).
USU continuously provide the necessary information to the national government in the way in which we can meet the sustainable energy target (Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy). Attached is the news about House of Representative of Indonesia Government visit USU related on the development of Renewable Energy Law.
USU through its innovation and incubator center has conducted start up funding in technology innovation for civitas academica of USU and especially the academia coming from Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Department , Faculty of USU. The funding include providing support to start-up low carbon economy/technology .
