A humanitarian outreach activity combining the distribution of essential relief items with a shared special lunch was carried out for communities affected by the flash floods in Dusun Sidomulyo, Desa Sekoci, Besitang Sub-district, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra. The activity marked the second time such an initiative had been implemented for flood survivors in the region. The shared meal served as a symbol of solidarity and togetherness, providing not only food but also emotional support for residents as they began to recover from the impacts of the disaster.

Distribution of Essential Relief Supplies

Alongside the communal lunch, various forms of humanitarian assistance were distributed to affected families. These included sleeping mats, blankets, sarongs, staple food packages, instant noodles, medicines, bottled drinking water, snacks, as well as books and stationery for children. The assistance aimed to respond to immediate needs while supporting early recovery, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The aid was made possible through donations from the Indonesian Association of Environmental Study Programs (PEPSILI) and the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Environmental Studies (S2–S3 PSL), Universitas Sumatera Utara, and was implemented in collaboration with the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Environmental Experts Association (PP HITI), BKM Syuhada Jl. Balam Sei Sekambing B Medan, and Praktek Umum dr. Aghnia Rahmi, Rantauprapat.

Assistance Delivered to Multiple Affected Areas

In addition to Dusun Sidomulyo, similar humanitarian assistance was also delivered to two other flood-affected locations in Langkat Regency, namely Dusun Pakis, Desa Harapan Makmur, Sei Lepan Sub-district, and Lingkungan Sempurna, Tangkahan Durian Urban Village, Brandan Barat Sub-district. This approach ensured that support reached a wider range of communities impacted by the flash floods.

Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals

This activity demonstrates the contribution of academic institutions, professional associations, and community organizations in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Through collaborative action and community engagement, Universitas Sumatera Utara and its partners continue to translate academic and social responsibility into concrete support for disaster-affected communities, reinforcing resilience and inclusive recovery in North Sumatra.
