Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), through its humanitarian task force USU Peduli, continued its disaster response efforts by delivering integrated health services and trauma healing support to communities affected by flooding in Kelurahan Terjun, Medan Marelan.

The activity was carried out by the PKM Medan Marelan Team, in collaboration with Satgas USU Peduli, the Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, the Psychiatry Study Program, as well as students from the Infectious Disease Club. The multidisciplinary team provided direct medical assistance while also addressing the psychological impacts experienced by flood survivors.

Integrated Medical Care and Psychosocial Support

Health services included basic medical examinations, treatment of common post-flood illnesses, dermatological care, and mental health support through trauma healing activities. Special attention was given to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals experiencing psychological distress following the disaster.

The involvement of medical students alongside academic staff reflects USU’s commitment to experiential learning while strengthening community-based disaster response.

Support from Partners and Facilitators

The implementation of this activity was supported by Artha Graha Peduli, which contributed essential medicines to ensure the availability of treatment for affected residents. The activity was facilitated by Prof. Sry Suryani, whose support enabled effective coordination between academic units, volunteers, and community stakeholders.

This collaboration highlights the importance of partnerships between universities, philanthropic organizations, and community leaders in responding to humanitarian emergencies.

Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals

This initiative contributes directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through accessible healthcare services, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by supporting disaster-affected urban communities, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through cross-sector collaboration.

Through continuous humanitarian engagement, Universitas Sumatera Utara reaffirms its role in promoting inclusive health services, psychosocial recovery, and resilience-building for communities affected by natural disasters.
