“Our inclusive facilities and non-discrimination principles are tangible expressions of USU’s dedication to gender equality,” stated Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara. “By supporting reproductive health and maternity care, we are empowering women to thrive academically and professionally while ensuring their wellbeing.”

Medan, 23 December 2024 Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has underscored its strong commitment to the inclusion and well-being of women through the provision of essential maternity and reproductive health facilities, complemented by an institutional framework designed to bolster gender equity in both higher education and the workplace.

While the university currently manages its support through existing frameworks rather than a formal, standalone maternity policy, USU actively ensures that all women—whether students, staff, or faculty—receive equitable access, protection, and support across the spectrum of pregnancy, caregiving, and professional advancement. This approach reflects USU’s dedication to cultivating a compassionate and fully inclusive campus environment.

A Robust Framework for Gender Equity

USU’s definitive stance on equality and non-discrimination is deeply rooted in Academic Regulation No. 13 of 2022, which mandates justice, equity, and transparency across all administrative and academic activities. This is further supported by Rector’s Decree No. 459/UN5.1.R/SK/SPB/2023, providing clear directives for inclusive practices and gender-responsive governance.

These frameworks are crucial in guaranteeing that women are neither excluded nor disadvantaged due to pregnancy, caregiving duties, or family responsibilities. The principle of equal opportunity is seamlessly embedded throughout USU’s academic and employment systems, granting women the necessary flexibility and institutional backing to successfully continue their studies or careers without facing discrimination.

“Supporting women throughout every stage of life is fundamental to USU’s vision of inclusive higher education,” stated Rahma Yurliani, S.Psi., M.Psi., Director of the Directorate of Student and Alumni Affairs. “We ensure that maternity and caregiving responsibilities are never allowed to become barriers to academic or professional success.”

Accessible Facilities and Health Services

USU actively provides access to maternity care facilities and comprehensive health services as a key component of its inclusive infrastructure.

Crucially, USU Hospital (Universitas Sumatera Utara Teaching Hospital) and affiliated campus clinics offer integrated reproductive and maternal health services for both students and staff. These services include essential prenatal care, childbirth support, and postnatal consultations.

Beyond these facilities, the university complements its support with health insurance coverage, flexible study arrangements, and academic leave options, which collectively aid women during maternity periods—even prior to unification under a single formal “maternity policy” designation.

Empowering Participation and Workplace Inclusion

USU’s inclusive practices actively promote academic and professional participation, making sure women can seamlessly continue their education or careers during the maternity phase. Through its gender-responsive policies and established institutional support mechanisms, the university is strengthening women’s engagement in leadership, teaching, and research reaffirming its dedication to equity across all dimensions of academic life.

“Our inclusive facilities and non-discrimination principles are tangible expressions of USU’s deep dedication to gender equality,” affirmed Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara. “By supporting reproductive health and comprehensive maternity care, we are directly empowering women to thrive academically and professionally while decisively protecting their wellbeing.”

Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals

Through its dedicated infrastructure, institutional policies, and an evolving inclusive culture, USU contributes directly to the realization of SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

Guided by Rector’s Regulation No. 3 of 2019 on the Green and Sustainable Campus and Rector’s Circular Letter No. 1 of 2023 on Inclusion and Sustainability, USU continues to enhance gender-responsive facilities and foster a safe, supportive environment for all women.

By strategically integrating health services, flexible arrangements, and equitable access, USU solidifies its position as a national leader in fostering truly inclusive education and empowering women across every dimension of campus life.
